Nick Lovegrove
Nonresident senior fellow in the Global Economy and Development Program
Nick Lovegrove is a nonresident senior fellow in the Global Economy and Development Program at the Brookings Institution.
Nick Lovegrove is a senior director of McKinsey & Company and for the last 5 years has led McKinsey’s Washington, D.C. office. He moved to Washington in 2006 after 24 years in London, during which he was elected a partner of McKinsey in 1989 and a director in 1995.
During his nearly three decades at McKinsey, Nick has worked at the intersection of the private sector, public sector and civil society. His clients have included leading national and multinational corporations; government agencies and departments around the world; multilateral development institutions, philanthropic foundations and NGOs.
Nick has advised several of McKinsey’s most important commercial clients – primarily in the consumer goods, retail, media and telecoms industries. In the 1990s, he helped to found and lead McKinsey’s Media & Communications Practice.
Over the last ten years, Nick has pioneered the development of McKinsey’s Government & Public Sector Practice. He has worked with numerous government departments and agencies – initially in the UK and Europe, and more recently in the U.S. federal government. He has also provided global leadership to McKinsey’s knowledge development efforts on issues such as public sector performance, economic development and government-business relationships.
Most recently, Nick has been working closely with the leading multilateral development institutions – the World Bank, IFC, IMF and IDB – both on internal organization reforms, and on strategic priorities like water security, global public health, sustainable cities and education for employment. He has also been working with leading foundations and NGOs – for instance, on the reconstruction of Haiti with the Clinton Foundation and other partners. And he has helped to establish McKinsey’s newly-formed Global Economic Development Practice.
From 2001-2005, Nick served in a personal capacity as a senior advisor to the Strategy Unit of UK Prime Minister Tony Blair. In this role, he advised on media regulation, the knowledge economy and education strategy. He has also served on the boards of several non-profits, including the Royal Shakespeare Company, and TeachFirst.
Nick graduated from Oxford University with a master’s degree in modern history. He was selected both as a Harkness Fellow and a Kennedy Scholar to study in the United States, and graduated from the Harvard Kennedy School with a master’s degree in public policy. He subsequently attended INSEAD in France, where he was awarded an MBA with distinction.
