Nick Szabo is a computer scientist, legal scholar, and cryptographer whose ideas about bit gold and smart contracts were foundational to Bitcoin and the cryptocurrency space.

In the 1990s, Szabo invented the phrase and concept of smart contracts. In 1998, he designed a digital currency called bit gold, a direct precursor of Bitcoin which provided the basis for what a blockchain looks like.
