British Ambassador to the United States

Nigel Sheinwald is the British ambassador to the US, a position he has held since 2007. He leads the embassy in Washington as well as nine consulates-general around the country. He joined the British Diplomatic Service in 1976. Before becoming ambassador in Washington, Sheinwald served as foreign policy and defense advisor to the prime minister from 2003 to 2007. He was the UK ambassador and permanent representative to the European Union in Brussels from 2000 to 2003. Prior to that he was Europe director in the Foreign Commonwealth Office from 1998 to 2000. He had an earlier posting in the UK Representation from 1993 to 1995 as head of its political and institutional section. He began his career in EU work as deputy head of the FCO’s EU department from 1989 to 1992. Sheinwald’s first foreign posting was in Moscow from 1978 to 1979.
