Happy New Year!
Please pardon the intrusion but I am reaching out to you to forward materials about my speaking/lecture background. I
Channeling your independent spirit is the theme of Author Nika C. Beamon's top selling book: I Didn't Work This Hard Just to Get Married: Successful, Single Black Women Speak Out. It, along with developing positive self esteem and learning to define your own expectations about life, relationship and career, are topics the veteran journalist talks about when she speaks to women of all ages throughout the country. Her main themes: you can live a fulfilling life as a single woman without being lonely or having to settle for a relationship you don't want.
Beamon is a Writer/Producer for WABC-TV Eyewitness News in New York; the number one local news station in the country. She often speaks about and how to balance a fast paced career and a relationship; it's something she's had to do the last 17 years. She has worked at various television stations and served as Coordinating Producer for "Like It Is with Gil Noble," the country's longest running African American public affairs show. She has been credited as a reference in the several books on television news including: Covering Catastrophe: Broadcast Journalist Report on September 11 by Alison Gilbert and News is People: the Rise of Local TV News and the Fall of News from New York by Craig M. Allen.
I know Black History Month and Women’s History Month are right around the corner so I wanted to ensure you were aware of my background and the topic I’ve had great success speaking about at high schools, colleges and universities and private organizations around the country.
Below is a detailed description of my basic lecture. If you need additional information or a copy of the book, I do hope you will contact me.
This year, I'm already being considered as the keynote speaker at Bloomfield College in NJ, BMCC in Manhattan, and Stanford in CA.
In the meantime, I hope you enjoy the rest of your year!
All the best,
Nika C. Beamon

THE LECTURE:
CHANNELING YOUR INDEPENDENT SPIRIT: LIVING SINGLE AND SATISIFIED
From the author of: I Didn’t Work This Hard Just to Get Married: Successful, Single Black Women Speak Out, Nika C. Beamon
Introduction: the inspiration for the book and the overall message.
More than 51 percent of women in America are living without a spouse according to the US Census. Turning 35 hits women uniquely hard because statistically 61 percent of all women over the age of 30 live alone, meaning they have not and may not ever find someone to marry. Their single status is compounded by the fact that 1/3 of women from 35-39 suffer fertility problems and of those who have biological children the odds of having a child with a birth defects rises to a 1 in 400. For many of these women deciding how to have a fulfilling life without a partner, including accomplishing milestones like buying a home and having kids alone are critical and difficult decisions.
In I Didn’t Work This Hard Just to Get Married, through lively and revealing interviews with women from various walks of life, the challenges and issues affecting single women are examined. These women candidly discussed aging without a man and reevaluate dating, career and family. The women discuss the false expectations they face from men, from families, and from friends. Their conclusion: Singlehood, whether temporary or permanent, and though often challenging, is a fulfilling state if you improve your self-knowledge and acceptance, accept being solo rather than settling, pursue your true passion and share your gifts and surround yourself with love.
II. The Fantasy:
This section of the lecture, I discuss how the Prince Charming or happily ever after fantasy warps the perception of most women to believe they must have someone to come and rescue them or that they need a wedding ring to validate their choices.
III. The Pressure to Conform:
This section discusses how women, no matter how successful are feel the need to please their family and friends and even religious leaders by getting married. The images are in movies, television shows and in popular music, reinforce these feelings of inadequacy, making it difficult for women to escape the need to conform in order to be satisfied in their lives and achievements.
IV. The Reality:
This section discusses the harsh reality of the state of marriage today. The divorce rate is more than 50 percent and for women, especially those living in cities in New York, being single is the norm rather than the exception. Therefore, marriage may not be an option may women get to choose and even if they do, it may not be a lifelong union so many women are finding themselves single again later in life.
IV. Redefining Expectations
This section discussed how to deal with being single in the here and now. It explores how to go about figuring out what you have to have in life and how to arrange it so that as a single person you can remove barriers, buck tradition and stereotypes, to go after what’s possible.
- Embracing Your Independent Spirit
This section talks about relinquishing control and the influence others have over your life. It teaches women how disagree and lessen the stress and pressure they put on themselves to find someone, anyone rather than be alone. It also discusses the tools needed to succeed solo like learning home improvement, understanding finances and retirement planning, educational support, a broadening ones family and friend circle, as well as mentoring and volunteering.
The lectures are usually followed by a Q & A and book signing
(Books are generally order by the college or university bookstore)
Speaking fee: ranges from $4000 to $7500, depending on location and length of lecture.
