Norm Mindel

Co-Founder of Forum Financial Management, LLC

Born and raised in Brooklyn, Norm Mindel was accepted into the elite Brooklyn Technical High School after passing a rigorous exam. He received a scholarship to Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) in Chicago, and graduated with honors with a degree in accounting in 1973. He then graduated from the Chicago-Kent Law School in 1978 in the top 10 percent of his class, and had also passed the CPA exam by the time he got his law degree.

He and a law school colleague started a law firm in 1978, and his practice concentrated on taxes, estate planning, business succession, and real estate. During that time, he also served as a lecturer in accounting at Benedictine College and then as a full-time lecturer of accounting at the Stuart School of Business at IIT.

In the early 1980s, he teamed up with Dave Reedy and Tom King to found the Terra Financial Companies, which included Terra Securities Corporation, a broker-dealer. The partners quickly discovered that they could grow the company much more quickly if they expanded beyond personal production. Terra focused on providing licensing and training for accountants and tax professionals so they themselves could become financial professionals. Mindel was instrumental in helping Terra grow into a national, multidisciplinary, financial services organization.
