Norv Turner

Former NFL Coach & Offensive Coordinator for the Carolina Panthers; Super Bowl Champion; Spokesperson for Multiple Sclerosis

Norv Turner is a former American football coach with a significant career in the National Football League (NFL). He has worked as a head coach for the Washington Redskins from 1994 to 2000, the Oakland Raiders from 2004 to 2005, and the San Diego Chargers from 2007 to 2012, compiling 118 wins during his head coaching tenure. Most recently, he served as the special assistant to the head coach of the Carolina Panthers.

In addition to his roles as head coach, Turner has served as offensive coordinator for several teams, including the San Diego Chargers, Miami Dolphins, San Francisco 49ers, Cleveland Browns, Minnesota Vikings, and Carolina Panthers. He also held the position of offensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys during their consecutive Super Bowl victories in 1992 and 1993, a testament to his significant role in shaping quarterback Troy Aikman into a Hall of Fame player. Turner's overall NFL coaching record is 114 wins, 122 losses, and 1 tie, with a winning percentage of .483. He has participated in four postseasons, maintaining a record of 4 wins and 4 losses.

Turner, an Alhambra High School graduate and a University of Oregon alumnus, began his coaching career as early as 1973 with roles that have varied widely. In 1978, he coached the USC Trojans football team. His tenure with the Chargers from 2007 to 2012 was marked by a regular season record of 59-43, including leading the Chargers to their first playoff victory since 1994 and an AFC Championship game in 2007. Despite missing the playoffs in the 2010 and 2011 seasons, Turner recorded his 100th win as an NFL head coach on November 28, 2010. His coaching service ended with the Chargers when he was dismissed on December 31, 2012.

Turner then transitioned to the Cleveland Browns as their offensive coordinator in 2013 and later joined the Minnesota Vikings in the same capacity. His stint with the Vikings from January 18, 2014, ended upon his unexpected resignation on November 2, 2016. Turner joined the Carolina Panthers as offensive coordinator on January 11, 2018, and moved to his current role after the dismissal of head coach Ron Rivera in December 2019. Despite the ups and downs of his career, Turner has remained a fixture in the NFL, with his son, Scott Turner, following in his footsteps as the former offensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders.

On a more personal note, Turner lost his mother to multiple sclerosis, and his sister is also living with the disease. He actively uses his platform to bring awareness to the condition, dedicating his time to volunteer work and advocacy.
