Octavia Spencer is an actress, author and producer. She is the recipient of several accolades, including an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, and three Screen Actors Guild Awards. She is one of two women of color to have received three Oscar nominations and the first black actress to receive two consecutive nominations.

Her critically acclaimed performance as Minny in DreamWork's feature film "The Help" won her the 2012 Academy Award, BAFTA Award, Golden Globe Award, SAG Award, and Broadcast Film Critic's Choice Award among numerous other honors.

Spencer made her film debut in the 1996 drama A Time to Kill. In 2015, Spencer starred as Johanna, the leader of the Amity faction, in "Insurgent", the second installment of Lionsgate/Summit's highly successful franchise. For her performance in Ryan Coogler's biographical drama Fruitvale Station, she received the National Board of Review Award for Best Supporting Actress. Spencer can also be seen in the action-adventure Snowpiercer, Get On Up, The Divergent Series, Gifted, and Ma.

She received Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actress for playing other women in 1960s America, the mathematician Dorothy Vaughan in the biographical drama Hidden Figures, and a cleaning woman in the fantasy film The Shape of Water.

In addition to her busy slate on the silver screen, Spencer made her network television debut as a series regular on Fox's highly anticipated drama Red Band Society. Spencer can also be seen guest-starring in the CBS series Mom, a comedy that centers on a newly sober mom attempting to pull her life together. Additionally, she made a memorable guest appearance in the final season of 30 Rock, starred in the Comedy Central series Halfway Home and appeared in a five-episode arc as the character Constance Grady on the hit series Ugly Betty. Spencer has been seen in guest-starring roles on shows including The Big Bang Theory, E.R., CSI, CSI: NY, Raising The Bar, Medium, and NYPD Blue.

She plays the lead role in the Apple TV+ drama series Truth Be Told and portrayed Madam C. J. Walker in the Netflix limited series Self Made.

Among her many other professional achievements, as an author, Spencer has created a children's book series, titled Randi Rhodes, Ninja Detective. She has published two books in the series, titled The Case of the Time-Capsule Bandit and The Sweetest Heist in History.

Spencer is a native of Montgomery, Alabama and holds a BS in Liberal Arts from Auburn University. She currently resides in Los Angeles.
