Oribe

Celebrity hair stylist and fashion industry luminary – has changed hair as we know it

Oribe has been the go-to hair stylist for photographers such as Irving Penn, Helmut Newton, Richard Avedon, Steven Meisel, Patrick Demarchelier, Annie Leibovitz, Herb Ritz, Mert and Marcus, Steven Klein and many more. His work with models such as Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell and celebrities including Jennifer Lopez, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Penelope Cruz, Jessica Biel, has graced the covers and pages of the world's most glamourous magazine and the airwaves of its most watched television stations. And in 2012 – with work gracing the pages of Vogue, Elle, Allure, W, V and Pop magazines this year alone – Oribe's career has arguably still not reached its zenith.

Beginning in New York's Fashion scene in the late 70s and early 80s, Oribe struck up a five year collaboration with photographer Steven Meisel and makeup artist Francois Nars. It was a partnership that defined an era, forging the way for the modern day supermodel, as the three artists worked closely with emerging models Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista and Naomi Campbell. Oribe's work during this time is often credited with helping to propel the fashion industry into the future, bringing hair styling to the foreground of fashion photography.

In 1987, Oribe opened his first salon – Oribe at Parachute – and established the Oribe Agency, which represented future beauty heavyweights including Laura Mercier, Nars, Kevin Mancuso, Bobbi Brown, Serge Normant, Danilo and Jimmy Paul.

The early 1990s brought a long-term collaboration with friend and mentor Gianni Versace, with resulting imagery that demonstrated a shared love for Miami decadence. In 1991, Oribe opened his palatial salon at Elizabeth Arden on Fifth Avenue. It was an unparalleled salon space, with the classical opulence of Versace's South Beach mansion and a location unlike any other on earth.

In 1992, Oribe was asked by the Metropolitan Museum of Art to design hair pieces from raffia and papier-mâché for the reopening of the Costume Institute Galleries, a sculptural directive well suited to his artistic hand. Oribe spent months completing the wigs, which were displayed on mannequins specially designed in Christy Turlington's likeness. Around this time, an article in the New York Times noted that runway hair, once designed only to show off clothes, had itself become a big deal. The occasion for their celebration was a Chanel show at which the deliberately disheveled hairstyles created by Oribe received as much attention as the designs. "All Karl Lagerfeld asked me to do was to make the girls feel beautiful," Oribe told the Times. "And they did."

In 1997, Oribe's focus turns from fashion to the new faces of fashion: celebrities. Oribe returned to Miami to work with the music scene's newest face, Jennifer Lopez. Lopez, who called on Oribe after a childhood spent reading his name in fashion magazines, requested that Oribe style her for the cover of her album, On the 6. Oribe continues to work with Lopez, having accompanied her throughout her meteoric ascent, and helping to create the JLO persona.

Throughout the 90s, Oribe kept a small salon in his native Miami at which he could style the hair of locals and celebrities in town for work or play. But in 2003, with a luminous career on the rise, he made the bold decision to permanently relocate to Miami, closing the doors of his Fifth Avenue salon. Oribe's new Miami salon opened on New Year's Eve in 2004 and remains in the same location today.

In 2008, Oribe parlayed his thirty-year heritage of hairdressing and his love of glamour and individual beauty and translated it into the collection of products he always imagined and envisioned: a range of grounded, old-world hairstyling products blended with new world technology and the finest ingredients. The end result is an edited line, focused on the needs of the most discriminating people: Oribe, his clients, his peers and anyone who believes in elegant beauty, high performance, handcraftsmanship and luxury.

Today, Oribe's work and innovation continue unabated. He travels frequently throughout the United States and Europe, continuing to pioneer trends in hair styling, and creating work for the covers and pages of magazines worldwide.
