Oscar Schofield

Biological oceanographer

Oscar Schofield is a biological oceanographer, interested in understanding how ocean physics and chemistry regulate plankton ecology. He believes that studying phytoplankton cell biology is the key to understanding marine food webs and dramatic recent changes in the earth’s oceans. His research often takes him out to sea with new technologies—satellites, radars, and underwater robot gliders that can stream data back to the lab in real-time.

Schofield believes that oceanography is a great vehicle for exciting the next generation of leaders about the wonders of the sea while simultaneously exploring some of the harshest and most unexplored environments on earth. Schofield is project scientist OOI Cyber-Infrastructure at Rutgers University and a professor of bio-optical oceanography at the Rutgers Coastal Ocean Observation Lab.
