Emergency Medicine Physician, Keynote Speaker and Medical & Science TV Host

Dr. Owais Durrani is a STEM education advocate, medical analyst, speaker, and practicing emergency medicine physician in Houston, TX. He graduated from The University of Texas at Austin with degrees in biology and political science. Before earning his medical degree from Oklahoma State University, he worked at The White House in the Obama administration where he briefly got to work on some of the expansion acts of the Affordable Care Act.

A first-generation American whose parents immigrated from Pakistan, Dr. Durrani has experienced barriers to health care firsthand, which fuels his passion for improving access to care. He works diligently to make sure his patients know about programs that subsidize internet costs and reduce barriers to care.

Dr. Durrani regularly contributes to print media and frequently appears as an independent medical expert on networks such as CNN, MSNBC, BBC, CBS, and NBC and other networks. He is deeply committed to speaking on a variety of topics including: advocacy, STEM education, blockchain in healthcare, and social media in medicine. He is the host of a children’s television series “STEM City” and author of "Basketball, Science, and Rockets," a book that demonstrates the diversity of pathways children can take into fulfilling STEM careers.

Dr. Durrani also hosts The Non-Fungible Human," a podcast where he chats with thought leaders, influencers, and newbies at the intersection of Web 3.0, the blockchain, healthcare, NFTs, and life.

In an age of misinformation, if we are not proactive about our field and medicine in general, then we are victims. When we have reports coming out that say missed ER diagnosis leads to deaths, we must combat these in thoughtful ways that are public facing - that means social media. Social media is relevant to our brand as EM physicians, to the medical education community, and so much more. Yet, most of us are shy or hesitant to use it in a professional manner. During this presentation, Dr. Owais Durrani will discuss how social media can be used more as a tool to achieve our calling, rather than a hindrance to our jobs.
