Pankaj Ghemawat

Indian-American Economist, Professor, Global Strategist, Speaker & Author

Not only is our world not flat, according to leading economist Pankaj Ghemawat, it’s not nearly as interconnected as most believe. Already renowned for his expertise in the general strategy field, he made his name in global strategy arguing against the popular presumption that globalization has already happened, leveraging extensive research and abundant data to back his theory that national borders still matter – a lot.

The youngest business guru to be included in the Economist’s Greatest Management Thinkers of all time, Ghemawat is a specialist on globalization, strategy and emerging markets. He serves as director of the Center for the Globalization of Education and Management at the Stern School of Business at New York University (Stern School). He is also a professor of global management at the Stern School and professor of global strategy at IESE Business School in Barcelona. He is a well-known speaker, consultant and writer on topics of business and competitive strategy, as well as globalization and its public policy implications. In his 2007 book, "Redefining Global Strategy" (Harvard Business Review Press, 2007), he asserted that a one-size-fits-all approach to globalization won’t work and companies must find ways to manage differences across regions. He expanded on this premise in his latest book, "World 3.0" (Harvard Business Review Press, 2011), cautioning that business opportunities will be missed if we continue to exaggerate the extent of global integration. In addition to numerous accolades by influential corporate leaders, World 3.0 won the Thinkers50 Book Award for best business book, the Axiom Business Book Gold Award in the International Business/Globalization category, and the IESE Alumni Research Excellence Award.

Professor Ghemawat’s earlier books include "Commitment (Free Press, 1991)," "Games Businesses Play (The MIT Press,1997)" and "Strategy and the Business Landscape (Prentice Hall, 1999)". He has also written more than 100 research articles and is one of the world’s best-selling authors of teaching cases. Focusing much of his work on helping companies and business schools better understand and address international challenges and opportunities, Professor Ghemawat is Chairman-Designate of the Strategy Research Foundation and a fellow of the Academy of International Business and the Strategy Management Society. He also served on the globalization taskforce appointed by the AACSB, the leading accreditation body for business schools, authoring recommendations on what to teach students about globalization, and how. In 2011, he developed the DHL Global Connectedness Index, a detailed, country-by-country analysis of the flows that connect the world.

Prior to joining IESE, Professor Ghemawat served on Harvard Business School’s faculty, becoming the youngest person in the school´s history to be appointed a full professor in 1991. Previously a consultant for McKinsey, he holds a bachelor’s degree in applied mathematics and a doctorate in business economics from Harvard.
