Patricia A. Hemingway Hall

President and CEO Health Care Service Corporation (HCSC)

From her early career as an intensive care nurse to president and CEO of Health Care Service Corporation (HCSC), Patricia Hemingway Hall has been dedicated to doing everything within her power to stand with people in sickness and health. With continual attention to how decisions affect 13 million members, she now leads and guides the nation’s largest non-investor-owned health insurance company, which operates as Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Illinois, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.

HCSC — the fourth largest health insurer overall — also operates Dearborn National, which includes Dearborn National Life Insurance Company, Dearborn National Life Insurance Company of New York, Colorado Bankers Life Insurance Company, Dental Network of America and DenteMax. Its other wholly owned subsidiaries include Hallmark Services Corporation, HCSC Insurance Services Company, GHS Property and Casualty Insurance Company, TMG Health, MEDecision and Academic HealthPlans. HCSC has more than 18,000 employees.

Hemingway Hall has received a number of recognitions for her leadership in the health care industry, most recently being ranked No. 11 on Modern Healthcare magazine’s 2012 “100 Most Influential People in Healthcare” list. Other honors include the Profiles in Diversity Journal “Company and Executive Women Worth Watching” 2012 Award, Chicago United’s 2011 Bridge Award and being named one of the “100 Most Influential People in Healthcare” in 2011 by Modern Healthcare, the YWCA’s 2011 “Outstanding Leader in Business,”one of the “Seven People to Watch” in 2011 by the Chicago Tribune, and one of the “Women to Watch” in 2011 by Crain’s Chicago Business.

Since becoming CEO in 2008, she has grown HCSC by more than 1 million members, built its technology infrastructure to an industry-leading standard, focused resources on creating an unrivaled customer service experience for members and increased the company’s investments in its local communities. One such investment is a program called “Healthy Kids, Healthy Families,” which is dedicated to improving the health of at least 1 million children before 2014.

In addition, through its Blue Cross and Blue Shield Plans, HCSC founded and continues to operate the often-imitated Care Van mobile health program, which provided more than 215,000 free immunizations and other health services combined to children and adults at risk in 2012. Hemingway Hall remains committed to helping ensure that all Americans have access to quality, affordable health care and to strengthening those qualities that make our system the best in the world — choice, innovation and competition. Previously, Hemingway Hall served as president of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas and as president and chief operating officer of HCSC.

Hemingway Hall is chairwoman of Chicago United, an executive advisor for the Chicago Metropolitan Planning Council and serves on the boards for the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, America’s Health Insurance Plans, Health Care Leadership Council, MEDecision, Prime Therapeutics, BCS Financial Corporation, Manpower Group, National Institute for Health Care Management, World Business Chicago and Chicago Advisory Board of the Salvation Army.
