Patricia Field

Costume Designer Known for "Sex and the City," "Ugly Betty" & "The Devil Wears Prada"

Famous for her work as a costume designer and stylist for the HBO series "Sex and the City (SATC)," Patricia Field, a native New Yorker, began her career with the opening of her Greenwich Village boutique in 1966. An iconic presence in the world of fashion, her memoir, "Pat in the City," was published in 2023, the same year she was named to Forbes "50 Over 50" list and "Happy Clothes," a documentary about her work, was released.

Known for what she calls "freaky fashion," Field is a champion of individual style and bending the rules rather than following trends. She made an international name for herself styling "SATC" and its two follow-up feature films, raising the standards in television and film glamour through her costume design. A true pioneer, Field has stimulated an entire fashion movement through the world in which high and low, old and new, are mixed together to create “The New High Fashion.”

Field’s impressive list of television projects also include "Emily in Paris," "Younger," “Ugly Betty,” "Confessions of a Shopaholic," “Crime Story,” "Wiseguy," and "Spin City.”

Field's styling on the feature film "The Devil Wears Prada" was nominated for an Academy Award, a BAFTA, and a Costume Designers Guild — an award she was nominated for 11 times, and for which she won four for "SATC," one for "Ugly Betty," and one for "Emily in Paris." Her first award was a Primetime Emmy Award for "Mother Goose Rock 'n' Rhyme."

A seasoned retailer, her eponymous boutique remained a fashion landmark for 50 years frequented by celebrities, stylists, emerging designers, artists, performers, and club-kids. In 2016, Field sold her retail property and launched a new concept, ARTFASHION. Born out of her long personal ties to New York art community legends like Keith Haring and Basquiat, ARTFASHION sees Field as curator, working with today’s talented visual artists who, under Field’s guidance, apply their unique aesthetics to hand painted one-of-a-kind clothing. Through her online gallery and shop, Field continues to bring these sought-after fashion creations to the public.
