Founder and Owner of Blind Ambition LLC, Author of "Blind Ambition", World Champion Athlete and Award-Winning Engineer

Diagnosed with a pediatric brain tumor, Patricia Walsh became blind at age five due to complications of surgery. As a teenager she struggled with depression and hopelessness. Today, Patricia is a world-champion triathlete and award-winning engineer. She has raced in more than 12 marathons and ultra-marathons. When a friend first mentioned triathlons to her in 2009, she immediately signed up for the IRONMAN, before even owning a bike. In 2011, she set the world record for blind athletes, blowing away previous female and male records by more than 50 minutes.

Patricia has a BS in Computer Science & Electrical Engineering from Oregon State, as well as a Masters in Executive Nonprofit Leadership from Seattle University, becoming one of the first blind engineers at Microsoft. Patricia is the 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015 Para triathlon national champion, the 2012 Patco Panamerican champion, 2014 Patco Panamerican, and a bronze medalist at both the 2011 and the 2012 ITU World Championship. Today, Patricia prepares to represent her country in the 2016 Paralympics in the sport of triathlon.

Patricia shares her personal story of overcoming obstacles, discovering resilience, and cultivating a skill set to overcome perceived limitations. This keynote can be adapted to meet organizational goals around adapting to change and staying vision focused.

Fuel, Fire, Blaze

Patricia explains a goal hierarchy. The top level (blaze) is the intrinsic motivation. This is what change you want to make in your sport/ industry that makes you jump out of bed in the morning. The second level (fire) goal is in determining what has to happen to get you there. What are the milestones that have to occur in order to be able to make the change? The base level (fuel) is what actions have to happen daily to support the greater vision. Fuel, fire, blaze is a toolset for mapping day to day activities to higher level motivation and inspiration.

Dream Big

Patricia speaks to the ways that we as professionals can empower our own success by taking on a willingness to risk. Dream big, the impossible may not be so impossible. All problems can be broken down into smaller problems that can then be solved. There is power in a willingness to take on a big risk. There is surface area for future accomplishments in evaluating the seemingly impossible for what it really is, possible.
