Patty Griffin

Grammy Award-Winning Folk Singer-Songwriter

Patty Griffin is a Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, and musician from Old Town, Maine. Griffin's musical style has roots in folk music but has crossed over to gain mainstream pop, gospel, and country music audiences. Griffin was drawn to music from an early age and bought her first guitar when she was 16, but didn't have any passions to make music her career.

After a failed marriage and a move to Boston, in 1992 Griffin picked up her guitar and once again began playing. After a number of local gigs, playing coffee houses in Boston, Griffin was spotted by an A&M Records rep, who signed Griffin on the strength of her demo tape. Griffin's debut for the label, Living with Ghosts, arrived in 1996 and showcased an acoustically-driven, stripped-down sound. Griffin's second album, 1998’s Flaming Red, saw a shift in musical direction to a higher tempo rock and roll sound.

Despite the warm responses from her first two albums and a steady growing fan base, A&M dropped Griffin after the completion of her third album, which they chose not to release. ATO Records quickly picked up Griffin, whose debut release for the label, 1000 Kisses, A Kiss in Time, was issued in 2003. Griffin quickly followed up with 2004’s Impossible Dream. Her next album, 2007’s Americana Music Association award-winning Children Running Through, peaked at #34 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart.

Her next album, Downtown Church, was released in 2010. It peaked at #38 on the Billboard 200, while also reaching #1 on the Christian Albums and Folk Albums chart. In 2011, Downtown Church won the Grammy Award for Best Traditional Gospel Album.

She followed up 2010's Downtown Church with the albums American Kid (2013), Silver Bell (2013), Servant of Love (2015), and the eponymous Patty Griffin (2019). 2019's Patty Griffin was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Folk Album, marking her eighth Grammy nomination.

Griffin's songs have been recorded by the likes of the Dixie Chicks, Martina McBride, Linda Ronstadt, and Mary Chapin Carpenter.
