Amazon Promise President Patricia Webster has dedicated her life to bring medical relief and health education to some of Peru’s poorest and most remote areas. Since 1993, Webster has brought medical and non-medical volunteers from throughout the world to the Amazon Basin in Peru to provide essential health care to over 55,000 individuals. As president, Webster oversees Amazon Promise's strategic operations and program development and also serves as the field coordinator for all medical interventions efforts, including managing all trip logistics and planning, supplies and inventory, and staff. Webster has been recognized as a CNN Hero (March 2010) for her commitment to bring sustainable health to Peru.
A native of Detroit, Michigan, Webster was raised with strong values of volunteerism and community citizenship. Through her family, she also developed a strong interest in home remedies from an early age, which later inspired Amazon Promise's signature characteristic--the blending of traditional and Western medicine. After high school graduation, Webster headed to New York and worked as a model, an ASPCA adoption counselor, and a legal assistant for an environmental organization before going to Peru for a wildlife internship. She was later offered a job as an adventure guide leading trips into remote areas of the Amazon; it was through this work that Webster witnessed the urgent need for health care in the jungle villages, and she never looked back. Today, Webster runs Amazon Promise's operations from Iquitos, Peru, and is leading the organization's efforts to build a permanent health clinic in Belen, the most impoverished area of Iquitos.
As an inspirational speaker and published writer on cultural preservation and traditional medicine, Webster provides unique insight to groups large and small on the principles of self-reliance, resourcefulness, and how to turn vision into reality while staying true to one self. Her stories of jungle encounters and providing urgently needed medical relief to indigenous groups in the Peruvian Amazon demonstrate that a life of service can be one of adventure as well.
