For the past twenty years, Paul Salopek has worked as a foreign correspondent in Africa, the Middle East, Latin America and Central Asia. His international reporting has won most of the nation’s major print journalism awards, including two Pulitzer Prizes for individual work; the George Polk Award; the National Press Club Award; the Overseas Press Club Award; the Daniel Pearl Award for Courage in Journalism; the Lovejoy Award for defending press freedom; a Ferris-McGraw Journalism Fellowship at Princeton University; a Nieman Fellowship at Harvard and many other honors. His work has appeared in National Geographic, the Chicago Tribune, The Atlantic, Foreign Policy, The American Scholar and Conservation Magazine among other publications. His reporting about war has twice been anthologized in The Best American Travel Writing series. He is currently at work on his first book, The Mule Diaries, which will be published by Random House. Salopek holds a degree in environmental biology from the University of California at Santa Barbara.
