Peter Barrett

Co-Founder & General Partner at Playground Global

Peter Barrett is Co-Founder and General Partner at Playground Global, a deep tech venture fund.

Barrett began writing software as a teenager; at 19, his first security program caught the attention of the National Security Agency (NSA). From his first company, Rocket Science Games -- where he helped pioneer CD-ROMs as a video game distribution method -- he has had an adventurous career in technology. He created the first widely used video codec in the early 1990s, and built the world’s most popular IPTV platform at Microsoft. His expertise extends to cloud intelligence for automotive applications at CloudCar, and cutting-edge domains such as quantum and optical computing, robotics, and artificial intelligence at Playground.

Barrett serves on the boards of multiple transformative companies in computation, AI, and decarbonization, including PsiQuantum, which is building the world's first useful quantum computer, and Universal Hydrogen, which is pioneering emissions-free aviation with 50-passenger planes fueled by modular hydrogen. He also led the Series A round for MosaicML, which enables companies to train and deploy LLMs and other generative AI models on their own data, and which was recently acquired by Databricks.
