Peter Gabriel

Singer-Songwriter & Musician; Humanitarian; Founder of Witness.org, Co-Founder of WOMAD & The Elders

Peter Gabriel is an English singer-songwriter and musician. He rose to fame as the original lead singer of the progressive rock band Genesis, which he left in 1975. His fifth studio album, "So," is his best-selling release and is certified triple platinum in the UK and five times platinum in the US. The album's most successful single, "Sledgehammer," won a record nine MTV Awards at the 1987 MTV Video Music Awards, and Gabriel was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Genesis in 2010 and as a solo artist in 2014.

In 1980, he set up the WOMAD festival and the label Real World to promote the music and culture of the world all around the world. He also co-founded OD2, one of the first online music download services, and has been involved in numerous humanitarian efforts. Notably, he released the anti-apartheid single "Biko" in 1980 and has won three Brit Awards, six Grammy Awards, and thirteen MTV Video Music Awards. In 2006, Gabriel received the Man of Peace award from the Nobel Peace Prize laureates and was named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time magazine in 2008.

In 2007, Gabriel founded with Richard Branson and Nelson Mandela the Elders.org, an independent group of global leaders working together for peace and human rights. He continues to be politically active, voicing support for various causes and political movements, including the two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the recognition of the Armenian genocide. He has also contributed songs to raise funds for humanitarian organizations aiding Palestinian Arabs in Gaza and has publically supported campaigns like #withsyria. In recognition of his commitment to creativity and its transformational power in building peace and understanding, Gabriel was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of South Australia in March 2015.

Despite his extensive involvement in humanitarian causes, Gabriel has not abandoned his musical pursuits. He released the album "I/O" in December 2023 and has mentioned the possibility of a follow-up album in the future. His music continues to be celebrated and enjoyed worldwide, and his contributions to the music industry and global society are widely recognized and respected.
