Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information United Nations

Peter Launsky-Tieffenthal of Austria was appointed by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to the position of Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information in May 2012. He began his duties in August 2012.

In this role Mr. Launsky-Tieffenthal heads the UN Department of Public Information, which has the task of telling the UN story to audiences worldwide, in as many languages as possible.

Before joining the United Nations, Mr. Launsky-Tieffenthal worked for the Austrian foreign service for nearly 30 years, including time serving in Asia, North America and the Middle East. From 2007 to 2012 he was Spokesman and Head of the Department for Communication and Information of the Austrian Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs.

Mr. Launsky-Tieffenthal held senior leadership positions in which he was responsible for formulating overall communication strategies, including the extensive use of modern media tools, crisis management and negotiating international agreements. At the United Nations, Mr. Launsky-Tieffenthal also serves as the UN Coordinator for Multilingualism. He works to promote multilingualism across the UN Secretariat.
