Philip Bane

Managing Director, Smart Cities Council

Philip is dedicated to using skill-full means to improve the lives of others. In March of 2016, he launched the Council’s Compassionate Cities’ initiative, an effort to increase awareness of how already deployed technologies can be extended to the disadvantaged.

The primary objective of Compassionate Cities is to innovate to include. By applying smart technologies – from data analytics to artificial intelligence to social media – cities, nonprofits and other stakeholders can effectively improve the living conditions for all – just through extending the reach of these technologies. There are four main areas of focus: Food and Water, Shelter, Wellness and Upward Mobility.

Philip and the Compassionate Cities team research existing applications to discover and publish best practices – demonstrating how the intersection of compassion and technology is reducing suffering around the world. Publication channels include social media, the Council’s website, and an email newsletter.

Philip held senior, global positions in sales, operations, and law. He was an Army Ranger while in the military, completed 200 hours of Vinyasa Yoga Training and is now studying to be a Zen Buddhist Chaplain for sustainability at Upaya Zen Center in Santa Fe, N.M. with a focus on homelessness.
