Phil tackles aging and retirement issues for Money Magazine and PBS in his “Ask Phil” column. He is a research fellow at the Center on Aging & Work at Boston College, and also co-author of “How to Live to 100,” a U.S. News & World Report e-book.
Phil began his career as a newspaper reporter and has been a financial writer and editor at The Baltimore Sun, The Charlotte Observer, Chicago Sun-Times, Hartford Business Journal and The Louisville Courier-Journal. His major business journalism awards include the Gerald Loeb Award for Distinguished Business and Financial Journalism. He sold that business and later was a corporate communications executive for a Fortune 500 financial services firm. He then returned to journalism as a Contributing Editor at U.S. News & World Report, where he wrote The Best Life column on retirement and successful aging from 2008 to 2013. Phil graduated from Princeton University and has a master’s degree from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University, where he also taught. He is married to journalist Cheryl Magazine and lives in Richmond, Virginia.
