Steve Owens is a former professional football player and Heisman Trophy winner.

Owens played for the Oklahoma Sooners where he became the school's all time scorer with fifty-five touchdowns, and is second most on its career rushing chart with 3,867 yards.  While at Oklahoma, he was the 1969 Heisman Trophy winner and a two-time All-American.

In 1970, he became the Detroit Lions first-round draft pick.  In his rookie season, he became the first Lion to rush for over a thousand yards and made the Pro Bowl. However in 1975, Owens was forced to retire after a series of knee injuries had plagued him for numerous seasons.  He was a two-time All Pro in the NFL.

During the 1990's, Owens served as Director of Athletics at the University of Oklahoma.
