Philip Shishkin

Bernard Schwartz Fellow The Asia Society

Philip Shishkin is currently a Bernard Schwartz fellow at the Asia Society, where he has been writing about revolutions and uprisings in Central Asia. Before that, Philip spent ten years as a staff reporter at The Wall Street Journal, most of it as an award-winning foreign correspondent. Philip ran the newspaper’s Baghdad bureau through the height of Iraq’s sectarian war in 2006 and 2007; and has reported from Afghanistan, the Balkans, Turkey and Syria, among other places.

At the Asia Society, his work focuses on the turbulent dynamics of Central Asia where years of dictatorial rule, ethnic tensions and bewildering corruption pose significant policy riddles for the U.S. and other regional powers. Philip’s research interests include democracy promotion, human rights and the inner workings of autocratic regimes.
