Pieter Johnson began working in biology early on, initially in marine systems as a scuba diver and subtidal researcher. While in college at Stanford University, he worked abroad in Australia as a research diver and rainforest researcher, which led him toward working in freshwater systems as well as marine.

He recieved a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences from Stanford and went on to achieve his PhD in Zoology with a focus in aquatic ecology and disease from the University of Wisconsin at Madison
