Plavi Jain Mittal became involved with the dysferlin field in 2001, when her nephew was diagnosed with dysferlinopathy, and she has led the Jain Foundation since its inception in 2005. She has rapidly built up the foundation in accordance with two guiding principles: (1) the creation of an in-house team of dysferlin experts to manage and coordinate research across the dysferlin field; and (2) active efforts to fully diagnose all dysferlinopathy patients at the genetic level in preparation for clinical trials. Previously, Mittal was a management consultant at a global consulting firm, where she worked with leading pharmaceutical companies. She earned her Ph.D. in biology from Brandeis University and did her postdoctoral research in molecular oncology at Harvard Medical School.
