Rachel Nugent, PhD

Rachel Nugent is Associate Affiliate Professor of Global Health and Vice President for Global Non-Communicable Diseases at RTI International.

Nugent is an economist specializing in non-communicable diseases (NCDs). She works with public and private organizations to increase and improve resource allocations for NCDs in LMICs. She is a member of WHO’s Expert Advisory Panel on Management of Non Communicable Diseases and The Lancet Commission on NCDIs of the Poorest Billion. She led the Lancet Task Force on NCDs and Economics (2018).

Recently, she has been on the National Academy of Medicine's Committee on Preventing Global Obesity (2018) and NAM's Committee on the Convergence of Infectious and Non-communicable Diseases (2019).

Nugent focuses on using economic analysis for priority-setting in health, and has worked with global and national institutions to increase the use of evidence for decision-making. Her recent work includes tracking donor funding on NCDs and assessing the costs and benefits of NCD policies and interventions.

She graduated with a BA from University of Wisconsin, along with a Master of Philosophy and PhD from George Washington University.
