An outspoken safety advocate in the helicopter air ambulance industry in America, Randy’s 50-year aviation career began as a helicopter pilot in Vietnam where he flew over 1000 combat hours and awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, 27 Air Medals and the Bronze Star Medal. Today he teaches others to become crew resource management instructors in a helicopter-specific CRM human factors course he built based on the European EASA and UK CAA models. A trained journalist, Randy writes a column in Rotorcraft Pro Magazine entitled ‘My Two Cent’s Worth’ and is the author of seven aviation books, three on aeromedical helicopter safety, two on crew resource management, one for helicopter air medical crews and one for non-medical helicopter pilots. Randy’s 13,000 hour aviation career has taken him to the Australian Outback, Papua New Guinea, and Iran as a senior instructor for Bell Helicopter. He was a pioneer in helicopter air ambulance and recipient of the first annual Golden Hour Award recognizing his efforts to further the helicopter air ambulance concept in America. Randy has flown in the Sultanate of Oman, Saudi Arabia, and Abu Dhabi. Threequarters of his career he has served as a company instructor pilot and flight examiner. In 2013 he was awarded the prestigious Jim Charlson Safety Award recognizing his personal efforts to reduce the terrible helicopter air ambulance accident rate in America.
