Professor Ravindra Gupta is a professor of clinical microbiology at the Cambridge Institute of Therapeutic Immunology and Infectious Disease at the University of Cambridge. He also has a faculty position at the Africa Health Research Institute in Durban, South Africa. In 2020, Gupta gained recognition when Time named him one of their 100 most influential people.
Gupta began his medical career as a clinical infectious diseases physician, but his passion for virology led him to pursue a PhD at University College London. His research focused on the epidemiology and virology of HIV drug resistance in sub-Saharan Africa and the complex interaction between the restriction factor tetherin and the HIV gene Vpu. However, Gupta's work extends beyond HIV. His research also includes studies on COVID-19, specifically drug resistance, virus interactions with human cells and the immune system, and immune responses to COVID-19 vaccination. His research continues to be supported by Wellcome Trust Fellowships, which he has held from 2007 to 2023.
Gupta's work has had a tangible impact on the global health community. His research on HIV drug resistance led to changes in the World Health Organization's treatment guidelines. Additionally, Gupta led a team that achieved a significant breakthrough, demonstrating HIV remission in a patient with advanced Hodgkin's lymphoma after a stem cell transplant. More recently, Gupta's group has made significant contributions to understanding the evolution and characteristics of SARS-CoV-2 variants. Furthermore, his work investigating COVID-19 vaccine-induced immunity in older and immune-suppressed individuals has received international recognition.
His extensive educational background includes a BMBCh degree from Oxford University, an MPH from Harvard School of Public Health, and a PhD from University College London.
