Regie Gibson
Regie Gibson is one of today's most recognized and accomplished poets. His form of melodic and lyrical verse has helped create a new era in poetry.
Poetry in general has surged in popularity in recent decades, and a large part of that phenomenon has been its emergence as a performance art. Few have helped shaped this reinvention more than Gibson, who has fused the literary and musical aspects of poetry, to create a whole new experience for the audience. The success of his work can be seen by looking at how venues for poetry readings in the United States have gone from a handful to hundreds, attracting a more diverse crowd than ever before.
In 1998 Gibson won the National Poetry Slam Individual Championship, this annual event is looked at as the top competition of today's poets. In 1999, Gibson performed for the award-winning Traffic Series at Chicago's Steppenwolf Theater, where he adapted the work of Kurt Vonnegut. Vonnegut, who was there to witness the performance, gave it his highest acclaim and believed that Gibson had understood and relayed the true essence of his work like no one before him.
Gibson also founded the Church of The Funky Word in 1999, a literary and musical arts ensemble utilizing ancient, contemporary and original literary text combined with world music and rituals from various world cultures.
He is widely published in anthologies, magazines and journals, such as Power Lines and An Anthology of Poetry along with three Pulitzer-Prize winning poets Gwendolyn Brooks, Yosef Komunyakaa, and Lisel Mueller. He has authored a full-length book of poetry entitled Storms Beneath The Skin, and his work has been featured in the film Love Jones, which is based largely on his life.
Gibson is not only a poet but a songwriter, author, workshop facilitator, and educator. He has performed, taught, and lectured at schools, universities, theaters, and other venues on two continents and in seven countries. This intelligent, stimulating and witty lyricist addresses each audience with a style all his own. His prophetic, articulate and expressive performances captivate audiences while leaving his powerful messages resonating in their minds.
