Regina Dugan

Inventor and Businesswoman; VP at Facebook's Building 8

Regina Dugan is the VP of engineering for Facebook's Building 8, a new arm inside the tech giant dedicated to developing futuristic technologies. A former DARPA head, Dugan left the Pentagon for Google in 2012. As a senior executive there, she worked on special futuristic projects for the company's Motorola arm, including moonshot ideas like electronic tattoos and battery-powered pills that work as passwords.

Regina Dugan has served as Head of Research and Development Unit (Building 8) at Facebook since April 2016. Dugan helps build hardware that uses Facebook's software and complements technologies from Oculus VR and Facebook's artificial intelligence research unit.

As senior vice president at Motorola Mobility at Google, her charge was to build and lead the Advanced Technology & Projects (ATAP) group. Skunkworks-inspired. Optimized for speed. Small, lean, resourced. With agility, freedom from bureaucratic constraints, and a willingness to embrace risk as core attributes.

Regina was the first woman to serve as Director of DARPA, the principal agency within the Department of Defense for research, development and demonstration of high-risk, high-payoff capabilities. DARPA has a singular mission: to prevent and create strategic surprise. It has a long list of breakthrough achievements ranging from the Internet and GPS to the M-16 rifle. Dugan first served as a DARPA program manager in 1996, and in 2000, she was awarded the Bronze deFleury medal by the Army Engineer Regiment. She also co-founded a niche investment company, served as a senior executive in several high tech startups, is an inventor or co-inventor on several patents, and has a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Caltech.
