Reinhold Messner is an Italian climber, explorer, and author from South Tyrol. A legendary figure in the world of mountaineering, he is renowned for his daring ascents and pioneering spirit.

Messner's passion for mountaineering was ignited at a young age, scaling his first 3,000-meter peak alongside his father at just five years old. After studying engineering and briefly teaching, he fully committed himself to mountaineering, earning renown as a boundary-pushing explorer. Since 1969, Messner has embarked on over a hundred expeditions to mountains and deserts worldwide. His achievements include countless first ascents, conquering all fourteen 8,000-meter peaks and the Seven Summits, and undertaking epic traverses of Antarctica, the Gobi, and Taklamakan deserts, and Greenland. His ascent of Mount Everest without supplemental oxygen in 1978 marked a historic achievement in the annals of mountaineering, showcasing his unparalleled skill and endurance. His contributions to mountaineering have earned him prestigious awards, including the Patron's Medal of the Royal Geographical Society, bestowed by the British Monarchy.

In addition to his climbing exploits, Messner is also a prolific author, photographer, filmmaker and lecturer, sharing his experiences and insights with audiences around the globe. His numerous books and documentaries offer a glimpse into the world of high-altitude adventure and the profound connection between man and mountain.

A former European Parliament member, Messner is the founder of the Messner Mountain Museum, which consists of six museums based at six different locations -- Firmian, Juval, Dolomites, Ortles, Ripa and Corones -- and the Meissner Mountain Foundation, which supports indigenous mountain cultures worldwide. He is also known for his advocacy work on behalf of the environment and has been a vocal proponent of sustainable mountaineering practices, working to preserve the natural beauty of the world's highest peaks for future generations.
