René Lerer, M.D.  

President of GuideWell

René Lerer, M.D., is president of GuideWell Mutual Holding Corporation, a $14 billion, not-for-profit health solutions organization that is the parent to a family of forward-thinking companies focused on transforming health care. GuideWell comprises Florida Blue, the leading health insurance company in Florida; GuideWell Connect, a consumer engagement and marketing firm; GuideWell Health, a health care delivery company; GuideWell Source, a provider of administrative services to federal and state health care programs, including Medicare; and PopHealthCare, a population health management company.

Dr. Lerer has more than 30 years of experience in executive management with leading, national health care organizations. Prior to joining the GuideWell organization, he served as executive chairman of Magellan Health Services, now Magellan Health, a $5 billion, Nasdaq-listed specialty health care management company focused on behavioral health, pharmacy and other complex areas of health care. During his tenure with Magellan, Dr. Lerer also served as chief executive officer and as president and chief operating officer.

Earlier in his career he held positions as co-founder and president of Internet HealthCare Group, a health care technology venture fund; chief operating officer of Prudential Healthcare; and president of The Travelers Health Network. He also served as senior vice president of operations, pharmacy, and disease management with Value Health, Inc., a New York Stock Exchange-listed specialty managed care organization.

An active member of his community, Dr. Lerer has participated in the American Cancer Society’s CEOs Against Cancer program and has served as executive sponsor of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the nation’s largest nonprofit mental health advocacy organization. He also has been the corporate chair for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s Walk to Cure Diabetes for its North Central Connecticut and West Massachusetts Chapter and was instrumental in the establishment of Hero, Health, Hire, an effort by the health care industry to employ and support America’s wounded warriors.

Dr. Lerer serves on the boards of directors of York Risk Services Group, Prime Therapeutics and Availity, and as a senior advisor to Frazier Healthcare Partners. He also is a board member of HIAS, the international migration agency of the American Jewish community. Dr. Lerer holds a bachelor’s degree in psychobiology from Oberlin College and a doctor of medicine degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He is board-certified in internal medicine.
