Executive Editor, STAT

Richard Berke is executive editor of STAT, a publication launched by Boston Globe Media in 2015 with the mission of delivering deep and tough-minded stories about health, medicine, and life sciences. STAT is based in Boston and has offices in Washington, San Francisco, New York, and Los Angeles. Prior to STAT, Berke was executive editor of POLITICO. For nearly three decades before that, he was a reporter and editor at The New York Times, where he served as chief political correspondent, White House correspondent, Washington editor, national editor, video content editor, and assistant managing editor.

Berke started at The New York Times as the night editor in the Washington Bureau. He was the national political correspondent for more than a decade, and as a reporter covered the 1988, 1992, 1996 and 2000 campaigns. He also covered Congress, the White House and domestic policy. In 2002, he became Washington Editor, and, at the start of 2005, moved to New York to be an assistant managing editor.

Berke began his career as a reporter at The Baltimore Evening Sun. He also worked at The Minneapolis Tribune and The Los Angeles Herald Examiner. He graduated from the University of Michigan and the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.
