Rick Carlisle

Head Coach of the Dallas Mavericks; Former Professional Basketball Player

Rick Carlisle is the head coach of the Dallas Mavericks and a former basketball player. He played for the Boston Celtics, New York Knicks and the New Jersey Nets before transitioning to coaching. He is one of eleven people to win a NBA championship as both a player and a coach.

Carlisle took his first coaching position in 1989, becoming an assistant coach for the Nets. He spent five seasons with the Nets before joining the assistant coaching staff for the Portland Trail Blazers, where he worked another three years.

In 1997, Rick Carlisle joined the Indiana Pacers organization as an assistant coach under his former teammate, Larry Bird. During his time as the Pacers' offensive coordinator, he helped the Pacers to two of their best seasons ever. In 2000, Bird stepped down as coach, and pushed for Carlisle to be selected as his replacement, but the job went to Isiah Thomas.

For the 2001 season, Carlisle was recruited by the Detroit Pistons to be their new head coach. In two seasons as Pistons' head coach, Carlisle led them to consecutive 50-32 records (.610) and playoff appearances, and was thus named Coach of the Year in 2002. However, the Pistons fired Carlisle after the 2002-03 season with a year remaining on his contract and hired Larry Brown. Friction between Carlisle and team ownership was cited as one of the primary reasons for the seemingly inexplicable firing.

For the 2003-04 season, Carlisle was once again hired by the Indiana Pacers. In his first season, Carlisle led the Pacers to the league's best regular-season record (61-21, .744) and playoff victories over the Boston Celtics and Miami Heat before losing to the Detroit Pistons in the Eastern Conference Finals. Carlisle left the Pacers in 2007 and became the head coach of the Dallas Mavericks in 2008.

The 2010–11 season was Carlisle's most successful as a head coach. The Mavericks finished the regular season with a 57–25 win-loss record. On May 25, 2011, the Mavericks enjoyed a 4–1 series win over the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference Finals, the first Conference Finals victory of his coaching career. In the 2011 NBA Finals, he coached the Mavericks to a 4–2 series victory over the Miami Heat for the franchise's first championship. On January 30, 2015, Carlisle recorded his 600th win in a game against Miami.

Most rebuilding teams don't have their rosters stocked with vets - but the Mavericks will look to veteran leadership to keep the ship pointed forward.
