What 21st Century Leadership Looks Like Beyond The Common Platitudes

There seems no end to the number of books published each year offering supposedly sage advice on how to become an effective leader. The issue is that most authors have never lead and managed a major company with billion dollar balance sheets, lofty performance expectations from Wall Street, and hundreds (or thousands) of employees. As a result, their advice is often filled with mindless platitudes or counsel that, while perhaps true, misses the most important attributes that a leader must bring, whether at the division, regional or national level. Rob's deep senior management experience and humor filled stories will entertain and educate the audience, no matter their current role. Most importantly, he will inspire them to higher levels of performance.

Participant Takeaways:

  • What your boss is really looking for if you aspire to lead.
  • The make or break nature of "hot fudge sauce".
  • The importance of competitive analysis and differentiation failure here is not an option.
  • How "8 points a quarter" and OKR's can get you to the hall of fame
  • Gifted leaders know this acronym quite well--"IPS"
  • If you remember nothing else, remember this!

The Existential Threat Facing the Homebuilding Industry

While the future of the homebuilding industry is quite bright, given the extreme 3+ million shortage of housing units in the US, there is a significant existential threat facing our country. A staggering number of households are simply not able to purchase a home today due to the combination of high mortgage rates and high average sales prices. The potential economic and societal impact of this threat is staggering. Rob Hutton's 30+ years of homebuilding experience gives him a unique perspective, having underwritten over 1,200 communities (most were large 1,000+ home master planned communities) and been a part of the design, construction or sale of nearly 120,000 homes.

Key discussion points:

  • As of early 2024, ~100 million households are unable to qualify for a home. Why?
  • The divergence between household incomes and average sales prices of homes, especially in the top 20 fastest growing cities.
  • What's driving the run up of new home prices?
  • What the stats say about housing and US GDP and those who own vs those who rent as to net worth?
  • What is the societal impact of the affordability crisis?
  • What are the things that builders, cities, counties, architects, engineers and trade partners can do immediately to help avert a crisis?
  • What new technologies are coming to the rescue?
  • Why is density perhaps the most crucial of all solutions?
