Rob Ward maintains his place high on the Midas List thanks to a savvy investment in open-source big data software firm Cloudera. That follows his previous win with Tableau Software, the data-visualization firm whose shares have soared since their May 2013 IPO. Ward cofounded late-stage venture firm Meritech Capital Partners in 1999 with help from counterparts at Accel, Oak Investment Partners, Redpoint and Worldview Technology Partners. He and his partners have helped to establish the firm as a late-stage powerhouse that flies under the radar. "We want our entrepreneurs and companies to be high profile, not us," he says. Ward has led the firm's investments in Fortinet, NetSuite, Cornerstone OnDemand and Imperva. In his off time, Ward plays bass guitar and tutors algebra at a school in East Palo Alto.
