Cofounders, Cell Phones for Soldiers

Robert and Brittany Bergquist are siblings, social entrepreneurs, and the co-founders of Cell Phones for soldiers, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to serving troops and veterans with free communication services and emergency funding. The organization was founded in 2004 by the two siblings. To date, Cell Phones For Soldiers has provided more than 300 million minutes of talk time to our troops serving around the world through the Minutes That Matter program, and continues the Helping Heroes Home via emergency funds that so far have assisted more than 3,100 veterans.

In 2004 at age 12 and 13, after hearing about a soldier returning from Iraq with an $8,000 cell phone bill rung up from talking with family back home, siblings Robert and Brittany founded Cell Phones for Soldiers. The nonprofit now provides active-duty troops with free calling cards, recycles cell phones and also provides one-time emergency grants for veterans to do things like pay rent or fund a car repair as they transition back to civilian life. Since 2004 they've distributed over 3 million prepaid international calling cards and have recycled over 11 million cell phones.
