Roger W.L. Liew  

Engineer , DSTA

An engineer at the Defence Science and Technology Agency, Roger entered Imperial College London with a government scholarship and graduated top of his class with an M.Eng. in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and the Henry Ford II Scholar Award. He was also awarded Union Colours and an Outstanding Student Award for his contributions to college and student experience.

Roger's interest in rural development and technology start-ups led him to his term as Chairman of e.quinox, a student non-profit organisation at Imperial College. During his tenure, he collaborated with international organisations such as UN-Habitat and led expeditions to implement energy kiosk projects in east Africa, providing more than 600 households with affordable electricity.

In his last year at university, Roger also co-founded MeshPower, a start-up developing micro-grids for rural communities. He now serves as advisor for MeshPower's business development and financing operations.

Roger's work in rural electrification has been recognised by international organisations, including GE's Ecomagination Innovation Award and a nomination as the youngest laureate at the inaugural International Convention of Environmental Laureates held in 2012 at Freiburg, Germany.
