Ronald W. Walters  

Political Analyst / Professor

Currently, at the University of Maryland College Park, Dr. Ronald Walters holds the position of "The Distinguished Leadership Scholar" and Director of the African American Leadership Institute in the James MacGregor Burns Academy of Leadership, and a position as Full Professor in the Department of Government and Politics. Formerly he was Professor and Chairman of the Political Science Department at Howard University, Assistant Professor and Chairman of Afro-American Studies at Brandeis University and Assistant Professor of Political Science at Syracuse University. He also served as Visiting Professor at Princeton University, and a Fellow of the Institute of Politics at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. He is a former member of the Board of Directors of the Ralph Bunche Institute of the CUNY Graduate School and University Center. He has also served as Senior Policy Staff member for Congressman Charles Diggs, Jr. and Congressman William Gray.

Dr. Walters is the author of over 100 articles and six books. One book, Black Presidential Politics in America won the Ralph Bunche Prize, given by the American Political Science Association and the Best Book award from the National Conference of Black Political Scientists (NCOBPS). His book, Pan Africanism in the African Diaspora, also won the NCOBPS Best Book as well. His most recent books are: African American Leadership and Bibliography of African American Leadership: An Annotated Guide.

He is the winner of many awards, among which are the Distinguished Faculty Award from Howard University, Distinguished Scholar/Activist Award from The Black Scholar Magazine, W.E.B. DuBois/Frederick Douglass Award from the African Heritage Studies Association, the Carter G. Woodson Award and countless others. He was awarded the honor of "Alumnus of the Year" by the School of International Service of The American University in April of 2000.

In 1984 he was Deputy Campaign Manager for issues of the Jesse Jackson campaign for President, and in 1988, was consultant for Convention issues for the Jackson campaign directed by former Secretary of Commerce, Ron Brown. He serves as a Senior Policy Consultant to the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and is Director of its Schoar/Practitionaer Program in its Devolution

Initiative Project. He also serves as a member of the Advisory Committee of the School of International Service at American University.

He is a frequent guest on local and major media as an analysts of African American politics in Washington, DC, and nationally, and has appeared frequently on such shows as CNN's Crossfire, The Jesse Jackson Show, Lead Story, CBS News Nightline, Today Show, C-Span, The McNeil/Lehrer NewsHour as well as countless radio programs.

For the 2000 Presidential election season, he served as Senior Correspondent for the National Newspapers Publishers Association, political analysts for BET's Lead Story, as well as writing a weekly opinion column and for NNPA.

Dr. Walters received his B.A. Degree in History and Government with Honors from Fisk University, and his M.A. in African Studies and Ph.D. in International Studies from American University.
