Rosanna Flamer-Caldera

Sri Lankan LGBTQ Rights Activist; Co-Founder of Women's Support Group & Equal Ground

Rosanna Flamer-Caldera, a renowned Sri Lankan LGBTQ rights activist, has been a cornerstone in the fight for equality and rights in her country. Throughout her career, she has held several distinguished positions, including being the first female Sri Lankan representative to ILGA and its co-secretary general. Her relentless advocacy for LGBT rights has been recognized on several occasions, such as when she received the Utopia Award in 2005 and was voted the Toronto Pride's International Grand Marshal in 2007. In 2024, she made it to the prestigious list of Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People.

Flamer-Caldera is a co-founder of two significant organizations in Sri Lanka. In 1999, she helped establish the Women's Support Group, a platform providing support for lesbian, bisexual, and transgender women. Five years later, she founded Equal Ground, an organization advocating for LGBTQ rights. Notably, her advocacy led to a decisive victory for queer women globally in 2022, when the U.N. sided with her stance against Sri Lanka's ban on same-sex intimacy between women, declaring it a human rights violation. This case brought LGBTQ rights to the forefront of Sri Lankan politics.

Aside from her work in the realm of LGBT rights, Flamer-Caldera is also actively involved in environmental activism. She runs a kid's environment club and organizes events for the protection of wildlife and jungles. She serves as an NGO Advisor for the Hirschfeld Eddy Foundation and the Global Fund for Women. With her diverse experiences and achievements, Flamer-Caldera proves to be a strong advocate for both LGBTQ rights and environmental protection, making her voice crucial in these arenas.
