Rose McGowan is an Italian-born American actress and activist. She gained recognition for her debut in the 1992 comedy Encino Man, and her performance as Amy Blue in the dark comedy The Doom Generation in 1995 earned her an Independent Spirit Award nomination. Her breakthrough came with the 1996 horror film Scream, followed by roles in Going All the Way, Devil In The Flesh, Jawbreaker, and others. McGowan is also recognized for her role as Paige Matthews in The WB Television Network supernatural drama series "Charmed."
In 2001, she starred alongside Brendan Fraser, Bridget Fonda, and Whoopi Goldberg in the dark fantasy comedy Monkeybone. She then portrayed actress-singer Ann-Margret in the CBS miniseries "Elvis" and had a recurring role as a con artist on the drama series "Nip/Tuck" in 2008. McGowan co-hosted TCM's film series program "The Essentials" in the same year. She further appeared in the action-thriller series "Chosen" and made her directorial debut with the short film Dawn, which premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. She went on to star in the four-part documentary series "Citizen Rose" and the independent Canadian horror film The Sound in 2017.
McGowan has also made significant contributions to the music industry. She appeared in the music video for Marilyn Manson's song "Coma White" and performed backing vocals on the song "Posthuman." In 1996, she was the cover model for the Henry Mancini tribute album "Shots in the Dark," and she served as the face of American clothing company Bebe from 1998 to 1999. She released her debut studio album, "Planet 9," in 2018 and reissued it in April 2020.
Aside from her acting and music careers, McGowan is known for her activism. She is an advocate for gay rights and campaigned against California's Proposition 8. She also supports Boston Terrier rescues. McGowan was recognized as one of Time's Silence Breakers in 2017 for speaking out about sexual assault and harassment. She released her memoir, "Brave," in 2018, where she details her childhood in a cult and her personal experiences as a victim of sexual assault. McGowan continues to voice her opinions, criticizing various political figures and societal norms.
