Roy Germano is a Senior Research Scholar at the NYU School of Law and Adjunct Associate Professor in the NYU M.A. Program in International Relations. His book, "Outsourcing Welfare" (Oxford University Press, 2018), explores the welfare impact of migrants’ financial remittances in Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America, and the Middle East. Professor Germano’s research has also focused on topics like the DREAM Act, intellectual property rights, judicial ideology, attorney fees, audiovisual research methods, water rights in Haiti, and the root causes of emigration from Mexico and Central America. His work has been published in The University of Chicago Law Review, The NYU Law Review, Perspectives on Politics, Research & Politics, Latino Studies, Migration Studies, Electoral Studies, the Duke Law Journal, The Charleston Law Review, and The William and Mary Bill of Rights Journal. He’s the recipient of two grants from the National Science Foundation.
Professor Germano is also the writer and director of five award-winning documentary films, which are based on his field research in Mexico and Central America. His feature documentary The Other Side of Immigration was named an American Library Association Notable Video and was distributed on Netflix. It has screened at hundreds of film festivals, universities, and public institutions, including the American Museum of Natural History, the Brooklyn Public Library, Princeton University, the Cine Las Americas Film Festival, the San Antonio Film Festival, Museo Amparo, and others. His short film A Mexican Sound was an official selection at the Boston Latino Film Festival, the San Diego Latino Film Festival, Dallas VideoFest, the CUNY Institute for Mexican Studies, the International Folk Music Film Festival in Nepal, and others. His documentary series "Immigrant America" was funded and broadcast by Vice News and won the Audience Award at the Bellingham Human Rights Film Festival.
Professor Germano has appeared as a contributor on CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, Univision, Telemundo, WNYC, NPR, and Vice News. His op-eds have been published in The Los Angeles Times, Slate, Vice News, The San Antonio Express-News, The Monkey Cage, and The Lexington Herald-Times.
