Rupi Kaur

Poet, Bestselling Author, Illustrator

Rupi Kaur is a writer and artist based in Toronto, Canada. At the age of 5, she began to draw and paint, a hobby she picked up from her mother. As an immigrant from India, she initially struggled with English, which isolated her from her peers. However, once she became proficient, books became her steadfast companions.

She continued to draw until the age of 17, when her focus shifted towards her passion for writing and performing. Her first performance took place in 2009 in the basement of the Punjabi Community Health Centre in Malton. For years, she dedicated herself to writing poetry, performing across Canada and eventually worldwide. In November 2014, she self-published her first poetry collection, "Milk and Honey," which was followed by "The Sun and Her Flowers" in 2017. These works have since been acclaimed for their raw and accessible portrayal of themes like femininity, love, loss, trauma, and healing.

Kaur's career is marked by her versatility in artistic expression, which includes not only writing and performing but also illustrating, design, photography, videography, and creative direction. She is also known for facilitating writing workshops that help others explore their own experiences through poetry. Her work, often a blend of personal tales and broader life and travel experiences, continues to resonate with a global audience.
