Ruth H. Santini
Nonresident fellow at the Center on the United States and Europe and assistant professor
Ruth Hanau Santini is a nonresident fellow at the Center on the United States and Europe and assistant professor in political science at the Università Orientale in Naples, Italy. She is also an associate fellow at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), Bologna Center. Until 2009, she was project coordinator of Italian Foreign Policy Dialogue, a research and seminar-based initiative sponsored by Compagnia di San Paolo and the Italian Ministry for Foreign Affairs. She has worked at several European think tanks on European foreign policy, international security and Middle Eastern politics.
Santini has recently published “European Union Discourses and Practices on the Iranian Nuclear Programme” in European Security (2010) and co-authored a chapter entitled “The EU Mediation Efforts Assessed by Iran and Lebanon” in Sonia Lucarelli and Lorenzo Fioramonti (eds.) External Perceptions of the European Union, (Routledge 2010).
In 2011, she was a visiting fellow at the Brookings Institution through a joint program with the Council for the United States and Italy. Prior to that, Ruth was project coordinator for the Italian Foreign Policy Dialogue based at Johns Hopkins Bologna Center, and collaborated on a freelance basis with several think tanks and universities. She completed her B.A. and M.A. in international relations in Bologna, obtained a M.A. in Near and Middle Eastern Studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies in London, and in 2008 earned a Ph.D. in European foreign policy at the University Federico II in Naples.
She was a European Commission Marie Curie fellow at the European Research Institute at the University of Birmingham from 2004 to s2005, a Compagnia di San Paolo-Volkswagen-Riksbanken visiting fellow at the Stiftung fur Wissenschaft und Politik in Berlin in 2006 and at CEPS in Brussels in 2007.
