Bashir is British Pakistani. She attended New College, Oxford, to read Philosophy, Politics and Economics. While at Oxford she was the first British-born woman of Asian descent to become President of the Oxford Union and was later a Fulbright Scholar at the Harvard Business School.

Bashir worked in private equity at the Blackstone Group and in investment banking at Goldman Sachs in London. She then worked at Gilt Groupe and was part of the founding team at Art.sy in New York. In 2004, Bashir was nominated for the Woman of the Year Award by publishing house Minerva

In 2012 she was reported as being founder and CEO of the Peek.com, a travel company, based in San Francisco, California. Bashir was named one of Forbes "30 under 30" in technology in 2012. Ruzwana was also selected as Silicon Valley's Most Stylish in Vanity Fair and as one of the most powerful women in technology.
