Ryan Germick

Google Doodle Creative Lead

The third of five children, Ryan Germick (Grrr as in tiger, Mick as in Jagger), was born and raised part a creative family in the rural suburbs of Northwest Indiana. Following the glory days as his high school senior class president, Ryan headed to New York City to study illustration and creative writing at Parsons School of Design and Eugene Lang College.

For the first two years of college Ryan worked weekends at the front desk of the Mercer Hotel, quizzically observing upper-class and celebrity culture. Ryan also served throughout his higher education as a killjoy RA, busting parties in a lawless Manhattan dorm. After two semesters of apprenticing sign painters and learning remedial Tamil in South India (part of which is chronicled in his first website), Ryan returned to NYC and interned for PBS as well as animation/interactive studio Funny Garbage.

Since graduating from said schools with honors in 2003, Ryan has completed design, illustration, and multimedia projects for folks like Ze Frank, Salon, Sony Music, HBO Family, Comedy Central, and Cartoon Network, as well as many non-profits, schools, musicians, and artists.

Ryan has also taught the finer points of comics, design, and animation at 826NYC, Parsons School of Design, Citizen Schools, and several art workshops in India.

In 2006 Ryan began working as full-time designer/illustrator for Google, where he co-designed the Street View Pegman and Gmail's emoticons. He now leads the Google Doodle team, and was a driving creative force behind the Pac-Man, Sesame Street, Charlie Chaplin, Les Paul doodles, Robert Moog, Star Trek, and 2012 London Olympics doodles and many dozen others.
