Ryan Leaf

Former NFL Player; ESPN College Football Analyst; Recovered Addict

Ryan Leaf is an ESPN college football analyst. He calls games alongside play-by-play announcer Clay Matvick.

Leaf is a graduate of Washington State University where he was also a standout quarterback leading the Cougars to the 1998 Rose Bowl. Leaf went on to play professionally in the NFL but injuries cut his career short.

Now an author and motivational speaker, Leaf shares his message of perseverance, gratitude, and hope. His motto of “Focused Intensity” is helping mentor young athletes on the high school and collegiate levels. Leaf serves as a guest analyst on numerous national radio shows while writing and speaking nationwide.

Leaf is a recovered addict. He was once one of the most promising collegiate football players of his time and rivaled Peyton Manning for the Heisman trophy. During the 1998 NFL draft, Leaf and Peyton Manning were considered the top contenders. Today, Leaf shares his life’s narrative as a former football star who had a tumultuous and public struggle with drug addiction but has now gained a life of purpose and peace through recovery. Leaf travels across the United States speaking to communities about his story of recovery – how he reconciled the failures of his past to develop into the person he is proud to be today. Leaf’s mission is clear and unwavering.

Leaf currently serves as the Program Ambassador for Transcend Recovery Community and its Mentoring Program. Given his personal growth and road to recovery, Leaf is extremely passionate about helping young adults manage the stress and difficulty of high school, college, and the transition to adulthood. Whether he is conducting assemblies at local schools or speaking directly to students in a classroom, Leaf is dedicated to helping young adults reach, and maintain, their potential.
