Sam Abell

Former National Geographic Photographer, Writer & Teacher

Sam Abell is a photographer, writer, teacher, and lecturer. Abell learned photography from his father, a teacher, at his home in Sylvania, Ohio. After graduating from the University of Kentucky, he worked for National Geographic as a contract and staff photographer for thirty-three years.

Abell has published four additional collections of work: Seeing Gardens; Sam Abell: The Photographic Life; The Life of a Photograph and Sam Abell Library.

In 1990, his work was the subject of a one-person exhibition and monograph titled Stay This Moment at the International Center of Photography in New York City.

In the mid-nineties, Abell and historian Stephen Ambrose retraced the Lewis and Clark trail, pouring over journals and reflecting on the trials and tribulations of what is still considered one of the boldest expeditions of all time. Using stunning imagery from his book Lewis & Clark: Voyage of Discovery, Abell explores the delicate balance between leadership and partnership that Lewis and Clark mastered in order to succeed on their journey.
