Sam Harris first gained recognition as the winner of "Star Search" at the age of 22. He is a platinum recording artist and has toured extensively as a concert artist. Additionally, Harris has established himself as a Tony-nominated Broadway star and a television and film actor. He is also the bestselling author of "Ham: Slices of a Life" and five New York Times bestsellers, including "The End of Faith," "Letter to a Christian Nation," "The Moral Landscape," "Free Will," "Lying," "Waking Up," and "Islam and the Future of Tolerance" (with Maajid Nawaz). "The End of Faith" won the 2005 PEN Award for Nonfiction. His diverse body of work covers topics such as neuroscience, moral philosophy, religion, meditation practice, human violence, rationality, and how a growing understanding of ourselves and the world is changing our sense of how we should live.
Harris’s writings have been published in more than 20 languages and featured in major publications including The New York Times, Time, Scientific American, Nature, Rolling Stone, USA Today, Newsweek, and The New York Times. He has contributed to The Los Angeles Times, The Economist, The Times (London), The Boston Globe, The Atlantic, and The Annals of Neurology, among others. Harris also hosts the "Making Sense Podcast," which was selected by Apple as one of the “iTunes Best” and has won a Webby Award for best podcast in the Science & Education category. He has appeared on shows such as Oprah Winfrey's to discuss and help inspire recovery from national tragedies.
Harris earned a degree in philosophy from Stanford University and a Ph.D. in neuroscience from UCLA. He has practiced meditation for over 30 years and studied with numerous meditation teachers in the United States and abroad. Harris has developed the "Waking Up Course" to teach meditation in a modern, scientific context. Additionally, he enriches his engagements with live musical performances and has raised millions of dollars for causes like the Special Olympics and The Human Rights Campaign. Harris currently resides in Los Angeles with his husband, Danny, and their son, Cooper.
